Writing fosters imagination and creativity in children. It not only facilitates the ability to create and solve problems, but it also sharpens communication skills as kids learn to use description and dialogue to convey a variety of ideas and emotions. This in turn has a great impact on their cognitive and social development, as they are encouraged to build their self-confidence through self-expression.
In this 3-session workshop for kids ages 9-12, expert Lenita Graves will use the steps of the Writing Process--Prewrite, Rough Draft, Final Copy, and Publication--to help students tap into their inner creativity and learn to express themselves in the form of a short story. Students will also learn how to revise and edit their story and get it published!
Session 1
By brainstorming, students will learn the five senses. They will be given a writing prompt, followed by time to prewrite with the help of guided questions and then work on a rough draft. Students will be encouraged to share their stories and learn how to provide and receive constructive feedback through editing each other's work.
Session 2
Students will continue practicing the steps of the Writing Process with another prompt.
Session 3
In addition to continuing to practice the steps of the Writing Process through a new prompt, students will learn about narration and points of view. They will also learn about publishing and get to see author Lenita Grave's website as an example of what they have learned.
Lenita Graves has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and has been teaching for over 32 years. She is also a published author, under the pen name Lenita Sheridan, of three children’s books in a series titled Guardian of the Gauntlet and has had poetry published in her hometown newspaper The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
