This 3-session workshop will equip students with the tools needed to write a clear, concise essay in the MLA style on any subject matter. Expert Michelle Nordmark will show students how to tackle writing prompts with confidence and ease using a process of consistent, clear steps from planning to final editing. The basics of essay structure and its components will be covered as well as transitions, tone, style, quotations, and editing.
Session 1
Instructor Michelle Nordmark will introduce the different types of essays: argumentative, expository, narrative, descriptive, test analysis. Students will then practice pre-writing skills through prompt reading exercises followed by brainstorming and pre-writing activities; learn about outlining; and understanding the basic essay structure.
Session 2
This session will focus on the different components of an essay and how to use them effectively: introduction and hook; using transition words to create a seamless essay; supporting the thesis with quotations, examples and statistics; conclusions.
Session 3
This final session will be a continuation of practicing the different components of an essay; understanding the MLA style; and learning about editing techniques and the difference it makes.
All of our workshops are held over Zoom.
